PBSci Machine Shop

Providing custom design, fabrication and repair of metal and plastic media for UCSC research labs and shops. Services range from removing a broken bolt to designing and fabricating complex research devices and equipment. (See previous projects.) 

Custom security cabling to meet more complex computer or equipment needs can be fabricated and installed by the Machine Shop via recharge.

Located just down the hall from the Campus Mail Services.

Please note that priority will be given to PBSci Divisional faculty, researchers, and instructional staff. The shop also provides services to University colleagues outside the PBSci Division.

Recharge Rate 
Design and labor - $86.50/hr
charged at 1/2 hour minimum increments, plus material.
A completed recharge form with a FOAPAL, and email authorization from approved signer will be required prior to the start of any service.

Basic Machining Class
The student machine shop class is a basic class with the emphasis on safety and simple set up and operation of all power tools in the student shop. The class consists of five 3-hour lectures and lab work from 4 to 8 hours. This class is mandatory if you wish to use the shop for university projects. You must attend ALL classes.

The complete class cost is $519.00 plus $15.00 materials = Total $534.00

  • If you are an employee at UCSC I will need authorization from your supervisor, by a separate email.

Payment can be made using a valid foapal from your PI or supervisor. I will need this sent by e-mail prior to class.

If you are paying this yourself I can set up an account for you with the bookkeeping dept. and you will have your own foapal numbers. I will show you how to do this. No fees will be collected or foapals charged until after class is completed.

After successful completion of the machine shop class the student machine shop will be available to all trained students, staff and faculty for working on University projects during normal working hours (M-F 8-12, 1-4). There will be a charge of $12.00 per hour for student shop use and replacement cost for any damaged or worn-out tooling.
